Hello! Today on Reading Wednesday we have a few books chronicling the Martha Years. Or, in other words, the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s great-grandmother. Let’s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is yet another series of books geared toward “younger readers”. (Such as this<\/a> series) In my opinion, however, they can be read by any age. But, if you don’t agree with that, and are still curious to read the books, how about reading them to a little sister or niece? I’m sure you’d both enjoy the books! The truth is, I haven’t read them in several years either, but I know I enjoyed them when I did. Perhaps I’ll read them to my nieces sometime. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something I just discovered? I actually own the entire Martha Years series. All this time I thought there were more than four, but I was wrong. I guess I should have looked that up a long time ago. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series begins with six-year-old Martha Morse. Her father is Laird Glencaraid, of Glencaraid Scotland. The year is 1788, and life is very different from what it is now. The books tell of Martha’s family, which consists of her brothers, sister, mother, and father. It’s pretty interesting reading about the way of life in that time-period. The different customs and folktales, etc. I’m not exactly sure how accurate the story is to the real Martha Morse’s life, but I think it’s probably pretty close. Starting from this one and reading all of the series’ down from Martha all the way to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s daughter is also pretty neat. Noticing all the details that carry from one series to another, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to find the Martha Years:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Well, I was going to leave a link here for the books, but I couldn’t find any that would lead to the whole series. I would suggest keeping an eye out for the books in thrift stores, used book stores, etc. Of course, you’ll never know what you’ll find at places like that, but you may end up stumbling upon the whole set!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
