Things to make with Apples

While this is by no means a definitive post on things to make with apples, I will list a few of the things we made ourselves. Let’s get started! (Oh, and if you’re interested in other desserts, here’s a link to another post on the subject.)

First up, the applesauce that mom’s been making. We bought a bushel of apples a few days ago at a local farmer’s market. Since then, mom’s been making applesauce and apple butter in large quantities.

Here’s another photo of the applesauce process, just before the jars went into the canner. This is probably some of the last canning that will be done before the winter. It’s a lot of work, but it’s also very satisfying to look at shelves of canned vegetables and fruits!

Things to make with apples: Dutch Apple Pie

And here we have what I did with about five pounds of apples: Apple pie! (I’ll put a link to the recipe I used here.)

Now, I usually make the typical crust-on-top-apple pie, but this time I decided to opt for something different and make a Dutch apple pie. It took a little longer using this recipe, since I had to peel the apples and slice them thinly for the pie, but I think they cooked more evenly as a result of that extra effort.

Here’s an example of the thinly sliced apples, covered in the sugar, cinnamon, and flour (etc) mixture. I would have taken more photos of the process, but I was just trying to get things done and didn’t remember to take many. That’s the way it goes sometimes. 😉

And here’s the pies! I think they turned out pretty well, though it’s anyone’s guess as to what they actually taste like. I’ll just have to find out! 😉 For the crust I used a Pioneer Woman recipe, if you’re curious. It’s a recipe we’ve been using for years, so it’s pretty reliable.

Well, that’s all for now! I hope you enjoyed this (sort of) random post. What do you do with apples? ~ Emily
