The Wide, Wide World
Hello! Today on Reading Wednesday we’ll be taking a look at The Wide, Wide World. The books, that is. 😉
Now, if you’ve ever read Little Women, you’d probably remember that this is the book that Jo March is crying over in one of the chapters. And yes, the two books do begin rather somberly with Ellen Montgomery and her very ill mother as the main characters.
If I’m remembering correctly, The character of Ellen is written rather in the style of Elsie Dinsmore (the heroine of a series of books I forced myself to finish. It was tough going. 😉 ) Meaning, she’s rather too good, and very emotional. Those weren’t my only issues with the Elsie series, but just a few. You’ll notice that I haven’t recommended the series here on the blog. However, I do think that as the Wide, Wide World story continues, Ellen becomes much more of a realistic character, if I’m remembering correctly.
But back to the stories at hand. It has been several years since I read these books, I will say. I believe I did like them, however. 😉 I seem to remember leaning more towards the second book as a favorite, in which Ellen is older. That seems to be a theme with most of these books. I should probably read the series again, however, just to make sure that there is nothing I definitely wouldn’t recommend. If I’m forgetting something, I can always print a retraction. 😉
Where to find The Wide, Wide World:
I’ll leave a link to the books here. You can also get a better idea of the contents of the series, as I’m afraid this post was rather vague. Well, surprises are a good thing, right? But seriously, the books are sold by Lamplighter, so I’m pretty certain they’re appropriate.
That’s all for now! What have you been reading lately? ~ Emily
