A Note on Notes

Hello! It’s Simply Saturday. Let’s get started!

Recently, I’ve been thinking that I should use my artistic talents (such as they are) for more than a drawing or painting that sits in my closet and never sees the light of day. My latest idea in that area is, why not seriously pursue the possibility of making my own cards? Plus, my mom has been asking me to make cards that she can send to people for awhile now. So it’s a win-win.

I’ve experimented a little in the realm of card decorating already. Pictured above is one of my earlier attempts. I like the simple lines and colors, but it doesn’t feel like exactly what I want. Unfortunately, I haven’t exactly pinned down what that is.

In an effort to find inspiration, I took a walk outside a couple of days ago to take pictures of a few things I thought would look nice on the front of a card. A walnut tree with a rope swing, an old baby-blue Ford truck, a wooden fence running alongside the old paddocks, etc. (As you can see, I also have a habit of drawing roses…) Things that wouldn’t look odd all on their own on a card.

I’ve also found that nieces and nephews make willing (and adorable!) models for my sketching. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time on the above drawing, but I still like the playfulness of the flower crown in the loose curls. I used a picture that I had taken of my three-year-old niece wearing a flower crown as a reference photo.

I’m excited to try different mediums in my card-making attempts. I’d love to try watercolor, calligraphy pens, colored pencils, there are a lot of options. What about you? Have you ever made homemade cards?

I hope you stay tuned as I explore further into the world of card making! Until next time ~ Emily
