From Bath to Milton

From Bath to Milton

Hello! I have some more books to share with you today. 🙂

First up, Northanger Abbey. This book is very amusing. I recently watched an online course from Hillsdale College on Jane Austen and more specifically, this book. It was interesting to hear how Austen had written Northanger Abbey as a sort of parody on the romantic novels that were popular in her day. The book made more sense when viewed through that lens, too. 😉

Northanger Abbey follows a portion of the life of the very un-heroine-like Catherine Morland. She is invited to travel to Bath with some family friends, and there she makes many new acquaintances. Most notably, the Tilneys and Thorpes. Catherine is rather too imaginative for her own good, but, I won’t say anymore. You can find out the rest when you read it for yourself! 😉

North and South is one of my favorites. (Oh, and the 2004 BBC series based on the book is also a favorite 🙂 ) My mom actually discovered the tv series. It was a short time later that I found out there was book, also.

The main character of the book is a young woman named Margaret Hale. After her father decides to leave the Church of England, she and her family are uprooted from the quiet village of Helstone to the smoky, dirty, industrial city of Milton. There she discovers two classes of people, the wealthy mill owners and the people who work for them. She also meets a young mill owner named John Thornton. Initially, she despises him, but after she gets to know and understand him and Milton better… Well, you can probably guess where this is going. I won’t spoil it anymore. 😉

I hope you enjoyed this post! Until later ~ Emily
