Thank God for dirty dishes…
…they have a tale to tell. 🙂 Today I have an interesting little project to share with you: how I hand lettered and painted a sign!
This sign has been sitting above my grandma’s sink for as long as I can remember. One of my older sisters, Caroline, has been saying that she would like something very similar to it. Since her birthday was coming up (it was yesterday) our family combined our talents and made one. I’ll walk you through my part of the process here on the blog.
After my younger brother, Caleb, made the wooden part of the sign, it was my job to write out the message and decorate the board a little. I used a high quality paper and black, Prismacolor marker for the lettering.
My first attempt (the white sheet of paper) didn’t work out too well. I tried again with better results. I marked straight lines on the paper in order to make the sentences even, carefully erasing the pencil lines when I had finished.
After I had finished with the paper, I brought out some paint supplies and started to decorate the board. Since I don’t usually paint very much, I searched on the internet for a simple tutorial. I didn’t follow it exactly, but it did serve as a rough guide.
Due to the nature of the surface I was painting on, the roses (depending on the angle you look at them) don’t stand out very much at all. It was nice to do something a little different though, and I don’t think they turned out too badly. 😉
Next, we mod-podged the paper onto the wood. Then, it was finished. What do you think? In my opinion, it turned out pretty well. They’re are a few things I might change if I could, but nothing major.
Well, that’s all for now. Have you been working on any art projects this week? ~ Emily
