The Lord of the Rings

Hello again! Today is Reading Wednesday, which means more book suggestions. The books in question? The Lord of the Rings.

Chances are, if you haven’t watched the Lord of the Rings movies, you’ve at least heard of them. But, have you read the books?

The books dive much farther into the world of Middle Earth than the movies. J.R.R.Tolkien had a talent for world and character building, and it’s evident throughout all three of the books in this series. I will say that at times, mostly at the beginning, the books can seem to drag a bit due to the amount of information given about the various people and places. As you get used to the writing style and understand Middle Earth better, this isn’t as much of a problem.

The The Fellowship of the Ring begins in The Shire, the home of the hobbits. Bilbo Baggins (the main character in The Hobbit) is preparing to celebrate his 111th birthday. His old friend, the wizard Gandalf, is also in The Shire. Frodo Baggins, the main character of this series, is Bilbo’s nephew. The next things to take place set in motion the events that push Frodo, his friends, Samwise, Merry, and Pippin on an epic journey. On the way they meet elves, dwarves, men, orcs, wizards, kings, queens…well, you get the idea. 😉 Five more companions join their company at the elven home, Rivendell. The wizard Gandalf, the dwarf Gimli, the elf Legolas, and two men, Aragorn and Boromir. Together they travel over treacherous mountains, through the tomb-like caves of Moria, and so on. It’s a long way. 😉

Where to find The Lord of the Rings:

Well, I realize as I write this that there is too much to sum up in a single post. 🙂 I hope you read the books for yourselves! I’ll leave a link to a boxed set of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King here.

That’s all for now! Have you read The Lord of the Rings series yet? ~ Emily
