Ladies’ Home Magazine, Summer 1938
Today I’ll be sharing some of the highlights from a Ladies’ Home Magazine I was recently given. Some of the pages are quite interesting. 🙂
And on the first page we have…an ad. I was actually surprised at the sheer amount of ads that made up the contents of this magazine. I’m not including a picture of every single one, since they say pretty much the same thing. Besides, there’s more interesting articles later on. If you’re wondering, this ad was for a medicine for women.
Moving on to the next page (and skipping another ad) we have a page of patterns! I was pretty happy about this part, since reading about and seeing the illustrations for the old patterns is much more my style. I was also sort of inspired to try and make my own late 1930’s outfit… Maybe some day.
The next page continues on with patterns, showcasing dresses for the morning, afternoon, and everyday. I was intrigued by the description for the Gibson Girl pattern. The “gay nineties” would be the eighteen nineties… I guess the old styles always make a comeback!
That page of patterns is followed by a short story. Or at least, the beginning of one. It’s continued later on in the magazine. I found that the writing reminded me very much of the Nancy Drew books, some of which were popular in the thirties.
My Favorite Portion of this Edition of Ladies’ Home Magazine:
Now, here are my favorite two pages from the magazine. They give an insight into the popular culture of the time, making references to Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, etc. It also refers to James Stewart as “the most up and coming young actor.” That’s pretty crazy to think about! The style of writing is amusing, as well.
The next page gives advice, such as how beneficial dancing can be, dressing rooms, cleaning creams, etc. It’s interesting to read about the old remedies and ways of doing things.
Hmm, this look into Ladies’ Home Magazine may have to be continued next week, since this post is already rather long. Anyway, I hope you’re as enjoying seeing these little things from the past as I am. There’s just something about learning more about what people just like us thought about, were interested in, and wore. Though to some it may seem rather boring, since everything that was contemporary when this magazine came out is over eighty years old. 😉
Well, that’s it for now! Are you interested in reading old magazines? ~ Emily
