Sewing with a Dress Form

Sewing with a Dress Form

Hello! Today I’ll be sharing some of the sewing project I’ve been working on recently. Plus a little about sewing with a dress form. Let’s get started!

Here you can see both the project and something I’ve been excited about: a dress form! I received it as a Christmas gift a few weeks ago. I haven’t had too much time to try it out, but it was nice to be able to pin the hem of the dress while it was on the form. I’d say I enjoy sewing with a dress form, even with the little I’ve been able to use it. Oh, and I jokingly call it “Emilie.” It would have been useful when I made this jumper!

A word on the dress: I started making this dress a few years ago, but never actually finished it. Turns out it was a lot easier to finish up when I could see it on “someone” other than myself. (Plus the form stands there very still! 😉 ) I can’t say I particularly like the dress, but hopefully I can find a way to wear it and make it a little better.

Somehow when I made this dress, I botched the neckline and sleeves pretty badly. I later added the pleats in the neck and the sleeves (those last ones you’ll see in a moment.)

I’m not sure it looks like it was supposed to be made that way, but maybe I’m wrong. 🙂 I think it does look a little better than it did before the pleats.

I sat the dress form on top of this rolling cabinet, so that I could leave the dress on the form and still stitch the hem. This is when I discovered that my sewing machine was only willing to sew at a snail’s pace. That slowed things down a bit. I did eventually get it done, but I haven’t quite finished up the rest of the dress yet.

Wrapping up:

Well, that’s all for now! I hope you enjoyed this little post about sewing with a dress form! Not too long of a post, but that’s just how it went! ~ Emily
