Sewing Tips from Decades Past

Hello! Today on Reading Wednesday we’ll be exploring some sewing tips from decades past. Let’s get started!

This book (if you couldn’t already tell) is from the seventies. I saw it at a thrift store a couple of days ago, and just had to pick it up. And also laugh a little at the title, because it was definitely not easy for me to sew with knit fabric. 😉 Maybe this book will actually be able to help with that, even if it is almost fifty years old.

Along with many other things, it tells how to work with patterns, mostly the ones that are affiliated with this book. I’m not sure the company exists anymore, however, so it might be hard to find decent patterns from them. I’ve also been thinking that maybe I’d be able to find some usable patterns at an antique store or something like that. I would like to try making some more “vintage” clothes.

The first page gives a description of the different knit fabric types. And also suggests using polyester stretch material for making clothes. I guess they didn’t like breathability. 😉

Some of the descriptions are rather amusing as well. Such as this one describing what a t-shirt is. Did people really not know? 😉

It also gives instructions on pressing knit fabric. This should actually be useful!

As well as the tools and needles to use when sewing with this type of fabric.

Now, this book is way too long to show every page. If you’d like to know something particular about it, or have a question that it might have an answer to, just shoot me a message on my Instagram.

Oh, and I did find a link to at least one of these books. A little digging around would probably turn up a few more.

That’s all for now! Oh, and happy second-day-of-February! 😉 ~ Emily
