Attack at Pearl Harbor
Hi! Today on Reading Wednesday we’ll be taking a look at another book, Attack at Pearl Harbor. Let’s get started!
I’ve always been fascinated by the time period in and around World War II. So naturally, I’m interested in books written about that time period. Here, for your consideration, I have just such a novel. 😉
True, Attack at Pearl Harbor might not be the most educational book (it’s intended for the most part for younger readers) but it still gives a peak into what the lives of two average teenage girls might’ve been way back when. It’s written in a rather unconventional manner, meaning letters exchanged between Meredith Lyons and Catherine Clark.
Meredith Lyon’s father is in the military, and her family is stationed in Pearl Harbor (the book begins in October of 1940.) She dreams of becoming a pilot, an unconventional wish for other girls her age. This causes friction with those around her, most of whom assume she’ll grow up and become a nurse.
Catherine Clark, Meredith’s best friend, is a budding newspaper reporter; though she also finds that her ambitions might be a little harder to achieve than she had first thought. Her brother Hank, has Polio, and is a key part of her life.
Their lives are pretty normal, for a time. Rumors of war circulate, but surely they’re not in any danger…right?
