Making a Pocketed Denim Skirt
Hello! Today on Simply Saturday we’ll be taking a look at making a pocketed denim skirt. Let’s get started!
You may recognize this as the pattern I used for this jumper, and this one, too. I pretty much followed it exactly; Except for with this project I avoided the confusing bodice pieces and used only the skirt part. After all, who doesn’t want a skirt with giant pockets? 😉
I wanted to use this fabric that I had leftover from another skirt. As you can see, it was a pretty tight fit. Oh, and don’t pay too much attention to the configuration of the pattern pieces in the first photo. I moved the pieces around after I took the photo.
This part is pretty much just following the pattern instructions and assembling the skirt pieces and pockets. Moving on!
And then I added the back piece to the pocket, which actually makes it… a pocket. 😉
Before I started working with the waistband, I had this: which is the back and front pieces of the skirt attached together.
The waistband was what I changed the most from the original pattern. The jumper had a waistband piece already included, so I used that pattern piece, but cut it out wider. Then I folded over the waistband, sewed it so it would stay that way, and ironed it.
Then I connected it to the top edge of the skirt, like so. The waistband process actually worked out much as I hoped it would, which is surprising. Looking back on it now, I think I would only have added some sort of twill tape or ribbon to the top edge, to keep it from stretching. It still worked out pretty well, though.
And it looked like this, before topstitching. That part, however, I’ll have to cover in the next post.
I hope you enjoyed this post on making a pocketed denim skirt. Do you have any sewing projects going on? ~ Emily
