Heriot’s Choice
Hello again! Today on Reading Wednesday we’ll be taking a look at another book: Heriot’s Choice. Let’s get started!
I can’t exactly remember where I found this book. It may have been an antique store, or maybe a book sale at a convention; whatever it was, it’s been sitting on my book shelf for years. I did try to read it (judging by the bookmark tucked into it) but I only got about six pages in. Back then I guess I wasn’t as motivated to finish books I didn’t like; also, my copy is old, and I was a little afraid that it would just fall apart if I tried to read it.
This last time I read through the whole book, and was pleasantly surprised. The story begins with the spinster Mildred Lambert, or “Aunt Milly”. And though it does start rather slowly, you’re gradually drawn into the story; becoming invested in the lives and goings on of the Lambert family, Polly, the Trelawnys, and of course, the titular Heriot. Dr Heriot, actually. I was a little surprised that Heriot was a man. I had simply assumed that due to the name it was a girl, but I suppose I should have guessed, because of the unusual spelling.
Now, the reason I was invested in this book was probably due to not knowing in the slightest what to expect. So, I’m not going to say much else about the contents of the book. Only that it skillfully weaves the many different characters and personalities together to form a compelling story.
Where to find Heriot’s Choice:
I’ll leave a link to a paperback copy, but there’s also a free Kindle version if you’d like that better (following the same link as for the paperback).
Well, that’s all for now! Do you like reading antique books? At the moment I’m reading another book from 1913. 😉 ~ Emily
