Something to Chew On

Hello! It’s Reading Wednesday. Today, I’m going to try something a little different.

Today I’ll be sharing two recently acquired cookbooks. Now, I know that this isn’t what I’ve been posting on Reading Wednesday so far, but even the most avid novel readers would be benefited by learning how to cook. 😉 These cookbooks were just recently bought at Ollies. I’ve already made a few of the recipes, and there are others that I want to try, also. I will add that I haven’t read every page in these cookbooks, but I’m pretty sure they’re appropriate. 🙂

First up, Recipe Revival. I picked up this book because it looked like it had a good amount of recipes that I would want to try and cook. I’ve already made the Hot Chicken Salad on page 113. It turned out really well. And although it was a little strange using potato chips as a topping, I would definitely make it again. 😉

Oh, and another thing I like about this recipe book is the little blurbs of writing on the pages, telling about previous issues of the magazine, Southern Living, and a little bit of the history of the different foods and recipes. Of course, that makes it a little difficult to actually start cooking anything when I’m just reading the cookbook… 😉

A few recipes I’d like to try in the future:

The Jam Cake on page 381, The Coconut Chiffon Cake on page 382, and (for something a little less sweet) the Yellow Squash Casserole on page 243. I’ve included links to recipes as close to the ones in the book as I could find.

Next, American Cookie. I’ve sort of developed the habit of trying to make a new variety every time I want to bake cookies. Needless to say, I was intrigued by this cookbook. It gives a short history for the cookies (which I like) and features many kinds I hadn’t previously heard of. My mom made the Maple Sirup Bars on page 162. They were delicious. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a recipe on the internet to share, so I’ll include a link to the cookbook itself, instead.

Out of this cookbook, I’d like to try Shirley’s Cinnamon Shortbread on page 155, The 1922 Girl Scout Cookies on page 91, and The Neiman Marcus $250 Cookie on page 32, for a few examples.

Well, that’s all for now! Happy cooking (and baking)! ~ Emily
