Christy by Catherine Marshall
Today is Reading Wednesday! I’ll be sharing about the novel Christy, by Catherine Marshall. Oh, but on another subject entirely, it’s finally chilly here! Who else is looking forward to the cold weather? (And the holidays that come with it. I know I am! 😉 )
Full disclosure: I’ve actually thought about sharing this book before, but always had second thoughts. It does contain a few more mature topics, I would say. Nothing gratuitous, but it’s just attempting to give an accurate picture of life in the Great Smokies in 1912. With that little disclaimer out of the way, let’s continue.
The book follows eleven months in the life of a young woman, Christy Huddleston. She leaves her safe, familiar home in Asheville, North Carolina and travels to Cutter Gap, Tennessee to serve as a schoolteacher to the children there. Christy finds life is far different in the mountains of Tennessee than it had been in her comfortable family home. She also learns that not everyone is thrilled at her coming. But she soon comes to greatly appreciate the mountain children and their families. She’s shocked by the poverty and dirt, but learns that not all of her attempts to help are appreciated or even wanted.
She’s thrown into further turmoil as she gets closer to the man who serves as preacher in the cove, David Grantland. She is also fascinated by others who live around her, such as Fairlight Spencer, the rough doctor Neil McNeil, and most especially her mentor Miss Allison. The latter being a woman whose faith plays a large part in her life. But, I won’t give away everything. 😉
