Stories from Grandma’s Attic
Hello! Today on Reading Wednesday we’ll be talking about the series of stories from Grandma’s Attic. Let’s get started!
These stories are geared more towards younger readers, but I think that any age would enjoy them. The stories are written as if they were being told to us by the woman who had lived them. Which is sort of the case. Written by Arleta Richardson, the stories are as the author remembers her grandmother telling them to her.
The books seem like they are written as a history, or in other words, non-fiction. I’m not exactly sure if every story is strictly true. They may have been embellished a bit for the books, as far as I know.
Mabel O’Dell, her family, and best friend Sarah Jane are most of the characters in the stories. The stories are also rather historical, shedding light on what a farmer’s family would live like in this time period, which begins sometime in the 1870’s.
Many of the tales are rather humorous, as Mabel and Sarah Jane get into many scrapes. Such as when they switched a baby with a pig, or made a face cream that couldn’t be removed. Much of the trouble they get into isn’t intentional but more from not thinking through something before they do it!
These four books tell stories from the time Mabel is eight years old to thirteen. There are also another six books that follow Mabel and Sarah Jane into adulthood. I’m planning on posting about those books next week on Reading Wednesday.
Where to find stories from Grandma’s Attic:
I’ll leave a link to the first four books here. If you do buy these books, just know that they are intended for younger readers. However, if you want and quick and funny read, these would be pretty good for that!
Well, that’s all for now. I hope you enjoyed this post! ~ Emily
